Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

adjusting inner tube length to ensure appropriate fluid flow around the core

measuring drill string components and calculating depth of hole

installing casing and seal at the collar

identifying hole conditions requiring the use of drilling fluid additives

monitoring fluid and cuttings specific gravity and up hole velocity to ensure efficient hole clearing

selecting the appropriate fluid pumping rate for the hole size

assembling, maintaining and using survey and core orientation devices

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting wireline core drilling through:

accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

operating drill rig

housekeeping

understanding the configuration requirements of various thread forms and make-up torque requirements

understanding the function of hole collaring, use of casing and collar sealing techniques

complying with methods required to produce uncontaminated samples

understanding the impregnated bit stripping procedures

understanding the bit selection for different types of drilling and different ground conditions

understanding the measurement of bits and other related components

understanding the critical dimensions of a core barrel if the barrel has to be drilled through to reduce hole size

understanding the relationships between penetration rate and bit life

understanding the role that core blockages play in affecting sample quality

understanding the functions of drilling fluids and control procedures

understanding the relationship between hole diameter, rod diameter, pump output and the specific gravity of formation cutting

understanding the types of mud and water delivery pumps and their applications

understanding the hazards associated with wireline operations and control measures required

understanding the purpose of drill hole surveys and the functions of azimuth and dip readings and where it is applied

understanding the core orientation and where it is applicable being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
